What kind of tub do you need?
- Newborn-only insert — sits in your kitchen sink. Cheap, fast, but outgrown by 3–4 months.
- Convertible tub (newborn sling that removes) — the workhorse. 0–12+ months in one product.
- Foldable tub — collapses for storage. Brilliant for apartments.
- Bath seat — sitting babies (6+ months) in the regular bath. Always supervised.
- Inflatable / rubber duckie — travel only. Don’t buy as primary.
The picks — reviewed in detail
Skip Hop Moby Smart Sling 3-Stage
Smart Sling supports newborns in slight incline, removes for the splashing 6–12 month stage, then the tub itself works as a bath until baby graduates to the big tub. Drainage plug, hook for hanging, anti-slip rubber ring.
Stokke Flexi Bath
Folds flat for storage between baths — the only tub that lives in a cupboard. Fold mechanism is solid (no leaks after a year of use). Included thermometer plug. Fits babies right through to 4 years.
Boon Soak 3-Stage Bathtub
Deep-bowl design uses less water while keeping baby submerged enough to stay warm. Sensible drain plug, rubber inserts grip wet skin. Outgrown around 9 months — designed as a 0–9 month tub specifically.
Summer Infant My Bath Seat
Three suction cups grip a flat-bottomed bath, tall front bar prevents slumping, fits adult tubs 30–55 cm wide. Never use unsupervised, even momentarily.
Munchkin White Hot Inflatable Duck
Packs flat in luggage, inflates in 60 seconds. Duck’s beak houses a colour-changing temperature indicator that genuinely works. Travel-only — the inflatable surface punctures with a determined toddler.
Bath safety: the rules that don’t change
- Never leave a baby unattended in any depth of water. Drowning happens silently in seconds.
- Water temperature: 37–38°C. Always test with the inside of your wrist.
- Set hot water heater to no more than 50°C — both Australian Building Code and US plumbing codes require this in homes with children.
- Keep baths short. 5–10 minutes for newborns and infants.
- Bath seats are NOT safety devices. Always remain within arm’s reach.
What we’d skip
- Bath rings (the floating O-ring kind). Unstable; multiple drowning fatalities recorded.
- Padded bath cushions for newborn use. Suffocation risk.
- Suction-base “anti-slip” mats older than 12 months. Mould develops.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I bath my baby?
2–3 times a week for the first 6 months. Daily baths can dry out infant skin and trigger eczema in predisposed babies. Wipe face/hands/nappy area daily between baths. More frequent bathing once on solids and crawling.
What temperature should the bath water be?
37–38°C (close to body temperature). Always test with the inside of your wrist or a bath thermometer. Set your hot water heater to no more than 50°C as anti-scald protection.
When can my baby use the big bath?
Around 6 months when baby can sit up steadily, with constant supervision and a non-slip mat. A bath seat (Summer Infant) helps with the transition. Always within arm’s reach until at least age 4.
