Best Booster Seats 4–7 Years (AU & US 2026)
A booster lifts your child so the adult seat-belt sits across the chest and lap, not the neck and stomach. Australian guidance says use one until at least 145 cm tall (~10–11 yrs); US guidance similar. Picks below available on Amazon AU and Amazon US.

High-back vs backless — which one?
- High-back — mandatory for under 6 years and recommended longer. Side-impact protection, sleep support.
- Backless — for older kids over 6, or as a back-up in second cars.
- ISOFIX/LATCH attachment stops the booster flying around when child not in it.
- Belt path correctly positioned. Lap belt across upper thighs, shoulder belt across collarbone.
- Not until child is 4 years AND 18 kg AND can sit still. Boosters only work if the seat-belt fits.
The picks — reviewed in detail
Britax Skyline 2
Australian-engineered for AS/NZS 1754. SICT side-impact pads, ISOFIX + tether install, easy-recline for napping older kids.
Graco TurboBooster LX
The best-selling US booster. High-back converts to backless when child outgrows the back. LATCH tabs anchor when empty. Cup holders that actually fit a water bottle.
Chicco KidFit ClearTex
Padded headrest with 10 height positions, ergonomic side-impact wings, LATCH attachment. The booster kids actually want to sit in for a 4-hour drive.
Maxi-Cosi RodiFix AirProtect
AirProtect side-impact tech (inflatable head zones), narrow profile fits 3-across in mid-sized cars. ISOFIX + AirGuard belt-positioner.
Diono Monterey 2 XT Latch
Narrow profile (33 cm) makes 3-across possible in most cars. Adjustable headrest and width — grows with the child to 12 years. LATCH connectors.
What we’d skip
- Backless boosters for under-6s. No side-impact protection.
- “Inflatable” boosters. Marketed for travel; not certified by either AS/NZS or FMVSS.
- Used boosters with cracked or faded plastic. UV degrades the structure.
Frequently asked questions
When can a child move from a car seat to a booster?
AU and US guidance: minimum 4 years AND 18 kg AND able to sit still with the seat belt correctly positioned. Many kids need a high-back booster until 8–10. AU law requires a booster of some kind until 7 yrs.
Are backless boosters safe?
For older kids (6+) who fit the adult seat belt correctly, yes. For younger kids, no — the high-back side wings provide essential side-impact protection that backless boosters lack.
Should the booster have ISOFIX/LATCH connectors?
Yes. The connectors prevent the booster from flying around the cabin in a crash when the child is not in it (e.g. you’re carrying them). Most modern boosters include this; older ones don’t.
