Best Breast Pumps in Australia & the USA: 2026 Buyer’s Guide
Buying a breast pump is one of the higher-stakes baby gear decisions you’ll make. The wrong pump turns a 20-minute session into 45 minutes of frustration. Our team tested the brands widely available on both Amazon AU and Amazon US so this guide works wherever you’re shopping from.

What kind of pump do you actually need?
- Manual silicone collector (Haakaa) — for occasional letdown collection on the opposite side. Almost every breastfeeding parent we know owns one.
- Single electric — occasional pumping. Quieter and cheaper than doubles.
- Double electric — regular pumping or returning to work. The workhorse.
- Wearable / hands-free (Elvie, Willow, Momcozy) — for parents pumping on the go. Quality-of-life jump but suction is generally weaker.
- Hospital-grade rental — for low supply or NICU. Usually rented through a lactation clinic.
The picks — reviewed in detail
Spectra S1 Plus
Hospital-grade closed system, rechargeable battery (pump on the couch with no cord), genuinely quiet, and the suction levels are smooth across the whole range. Most lactation consultants we spoke to recommend this first.
Medela Swing Maxi
Fits in a handbag, USB rechargeable, and the suction is strong for its size. Not as gentle as the Spectra on long sessions, but for the “pump at work twice a day” use case, the most practical option.
Elvie Stride
Sits inside your bra, no dangling tubes. Pump in a meeting and nobody knows. Trade-off is suction strength — takes 5–10 minutes longer per session than the Spectra.
Lansinoh Smartpump 3.0
App-connected, double electric, and the bottles fit Lansinoh’s milk storage bag system directly. Motor is louder than premium options but for daytime use it’s fine.
Haakaa Silicone Pump
Not technically a pump — a one-piece silicone suction cup that catches letdown on the opposite breast while baby feeds. Cheap, dishwasher-safe, no parts to wash. Every breastfeeding parent we know has one.
What we’d skip
- Pre-2018 used pumps from unknown sellers. Older open-system pumps can harbour mould.
- $30 no-name electric pumps. Motor blows out within weeks.
- Pumps without a clear flange-size range. The included size is rarely the right one anyway.
