Steam vs UV vs microwave
- Electric steam steriliser — the workhorse. 8–12 minutes for a 6-bottle load, kills 99.9% of pathogens.
- UV steriliser — chemical-free and silent, but slower and pricier.
- Microwave steriliser — cheapest, sits in your microwave, 2–6 minutes. Limited capacity.
- Cold-water (chemical) steriliser — tablets in cold water. Useful for travel and camping.
- Use distilled or filtered water if you live in a hard-water area to prevent limescale build-up.
The picks — reviewed in detail
Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Electric
6-bottle capacity, 5-minute cycle, indicator light that genuinely tells you when it’s done, holds load sterile for up to 24 hours if lid stays closed. Generous water reservoir.
Philips Avent 3-in-1
Three height settings — small for accessories, medium for 6 bottles, large for breast pump parts. Lid doubles as upside-down tray to keep parts uncontaminated. 6-min cycle, 24-hour hold.
Coral UV 3 Sterilizer + Dryer
Sterilises and dries in one cycle, so bottles come out ready to use. UV-C kills 99.9% of pathogens including spores steam can miss. Quiet enough to run on a bedroom dresser.
Medela Quick Clean Microwave Bags
Reusable microwave bags. Each does 20 cycles, sterilises in 3 minutes, packs flat. Our team’s “in the change bag forever” pick.
Munchkin Steam Guard Microwave
Sits in your microwave, 90 seconds for 4 bottles. Quarter the price of an electric. Smaller capacity, manual draining, very hot — but it works.
How long do you actually need to sterilise?
Australian Department of Health and AAP guidance both say sterilise everything that goes in baby’s mouth for at least the first 12 months. After 12 months a hot soapy wash is generally sufficient for healthy term babies on solids. Premature, immunocompromised or at-risk babies should keep sterilising longer per their paediatrician’s advice.
What we’d skip
- Sterilisers without auto-shutoff. Boil-dry damages the heating element fast.
- Open-water sterilisers without descaling instructions. Limescale build-up is the #1 reason units fail.
- Devices that combine steriliser + warmer + formula prep. Each function does worse than dedicated tools.
